Hywel started learning guitar at 12 years old, from his older brother, Tom. His time at university was largely spent practising and playing silly music in his bands Replica X and Cakeflap, covering a range of styles, from progressive-rock to progressive-fusion and everything in between.

In 2010, Hywel shot onto the British prog scene as part of Dec Burke's release, 'Destroy All Monsters'. Hywel played the first guitar solo on 'The Small Hours' and joined Dec's live band for gigs around the UK and Europe, playing second guitar and performing backing vocals.

Hywel plays on the title track, "Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed".
